Katie McAlister,  Professional Counselor Associate

Arise Albany Therapist

My name is Katie McAlister and I am a LPC-Associate working towards licensure. I grew up here in Oregon then moved around to various places across the globe for school and the military. I spend my free time with my son, relaxing with my family, reading, and traveling. I am a Christian and am so thankful for how God has worked in my life. I value your beliefs and you will be met with compassion and respect whether your worldviews are similar or different to mine.

Can I help you ?

I offer psychotherapy and counseling to couples as well as individual adults 18 and older.

Psychotherapy and counseling can be helpful in a variety of issues.

I can help with:

  • Anxiety, worry, stress
  • Depression and sadness
  • Self-esteem
  • Anger problems and emotion regulation
  •  Life transitions
  • Communication skills
  • Past affairs, & other relationship conflicts

We all have unique stories and strengths which form us. I believe that given the opportunity to share your story, build upon your strengths, and create a new way to think about your story is powerful. Counseling provides this opportunity and the tools to overcome whatever you might be facing and become who you want to be.

Therapeutic Focus

I utilize Cognitive Behavior Therapy as my primary methodology with individuals. I believe that our thoughts and beliefs greatly influence our behaviors. While providing a supportive, compassionate environment we will work together as a team to understand the hurdles you’re facing and develop ways to overcome them. Together we will challenge distorted cognitions and change destructive thought patterns that lead to distressing behaviors and emotions.

For couples: I believe that you and your partner are the team and it is my job to guide you in rebuilding that team by teaching you ways to explore each other’s worlds and communicate effectively. I primarily utilize the Gottman Method Couples Therapy and Prepare/Enrich Counseling in my work with couples.

As part of my graduate training I completed a practicum and internship both at Friends of the Family Ministries in Corvallis. While there I gained experience with adult individuals as well as couples and groups.

Formal Training and Education

I hold a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health from Colorado Christian University. My bachelors is in Biology also from Colorado Christian University. I have completed levels 1 & 2 of Gottman Method Couples Therapy and am trained in Prepare/Enrich Couples & Premarital Counseling.
