Jonathan West-Gray, LPC-Intern

My name is Jonathan West-Gray and I am an LPC-intern working towards licensure. I grew up in California, which, coupled with my love of sociology, has contributed to my interest in minority populations. Having originally been trained for a career on the violin, I have an ardent love for music.

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and my Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from Western Oregon University.

Can I help you ?

I work with adults who have been experiencing:

● Depression and depressive symptoms (i.e.: feelings of sadness and emptiness, fatigue,

loss of interest in activities, sleep disturbances)

● Anxiety disorders (i.e.: social anxiety, panic disorder, generalized anxiety)

● Personality disorders (i.e.: borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality

disorder)

● Trauma related disorders (i.e.: post traumatic stress disorder, adjustment disorder)

I also have experience working with individuals who are looking to process, explore, and/or

reconcile various and perhaps seemingly competing identities (i.e.: sexual identity and spiritual

identity, racial/ethnic identities).

Approach

I approach therapy with an open, curious, and nonjudgmental stance. I like to help clients identify their strengths and values so that they can be used to enhance functioning. As a therapist, I try to take the most holistic approach possible, examining as many aspects of your life as you feel comfortable sharing with me. I also like to tailor my counseling style to match what you as a client are looking for.

Therapeutic Focus

As a therapist, I utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients incorporate mindfulness-based techniques and exercises into their lives inside and out of the therapeutic

space. ACT is a cognitive-behaviorally-based theory, and aims to increase psychological flexibility and help you as a client learn how to make meaningful contact with your emotions. ACT helps teach how to accept those aspects of life that cannot be controlled, and how to commit to enacting positive change that aligns with your values.

Many of the techniques and skills utilized in ACT overlap with traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), with the added benefit of incorporating more emotional aspects than traditional

CBT. I also employ some Adlerian techniques, such as examining your family of origin, birth order, and early childhood recollections to help gain insight into your current level of functioning.

Experience

The training that accompanied my graduate program includes completing a practicum and

internship, both of which were completed at Western Oregon University’s Student Health and

Counseling Center, where I worked as a counselor intern. During my training I gained

experience in individual therapy, couples counseling, and group therapy. I was able to develop a

curriculum for and facilitate a psychoeducation/process group aimed at helping sexual minorities

(LGBTQI+ individuals) who have been impacted by religious abuse/trauma.

Formal Training and Education

I am currently working towards licensure as a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in the state

or Oregon, intern number R6470. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in

2017 and my Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling in 2020

from Western Oregon University
