Bob Nielsen, LCSW
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
I grew up in Illinois, attended college in Wisconsin (Marquette/BA) and Oregon (PSU/MSW degree). I have lived in Oregon since 1989, and the Salem area since 1996. I have worked with people with various disabilities for over 30 plus years in residential supports and as a therapist since 2016. I aim to meet you where you find yourself in life and help you get to where you want to be.
People generally start counseling due to some kind of emotional suffering. They are seeking relief as quickly as possible. My training and practice are based on a strengths-based and solution-focused perspective, and I borrow from many different theory bases for psychotherapy in aiming to understand and meet the individual needs of each person and of each family. These theories include cognitive-behavioral, reality-based, mindfulness-based, social learning theory and family systems theories. Techniques that I utilize may include dialogue, psycho education, relaxation, reframing of negative thoughts, positive decision-making, role-play, mindfulness or writing/art exercises.
Working collaboratively, the client and I create treatment goals, building on the strengths and prior experiences of success they’ve had, to discover where the obstructions are to attaining their goals and removing those barriers through the interventions mentioned above.
